Street Food Central Thailand
Bangkok (TH)
Ouan Pochana is a street cart with tables on the pavement of Yaowarat Road, in front of the old Chinatown Rama cinema. Its guay jub is known for a clear pork-bone broth so heavy with white pepper that some visitors compare it to bak kut teh.
The family has been selling this soup for over fifty years, and the stall held a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the guides from 2019 to 2022. Bowls are cheap and come quickly, with crispy pork belly, offal and a soft-boiled egg. Seating is tight and the atmosphere is pure Chinatown, with traffic and neon a few feet away.
What to order
- Guay jub with crispy pork belly: rolled noodles in the signature peppery broth
- Add an egg: a soft-boiled egg that softens the heat of the pepper
- Mini you tiao: crisp fried dough pieces to dunk in the soup
Good to know
- It is an evening and late-night operation; check current hours before going, as they have changed over the years.
- The pepper is strong, so order a cold drink.
- It is about a ten-minute walk from MRT Wat Mangkon or Hua Lamphong.
