Khao Soi Islam is a family-run Muslim restaurant on a lane off Charoen Prathet Road, in the Ban Haw neighbourhood east of the Night Bazaar. It is halal and alcohol-free, and the menu mixes khao soi with Thai-Muslim staples.
The area has had a Muslim community since around the 19th century, and some accounts link it to how khao soi first reached Chiang Mai. The version here is lighter and more subtly spiced than many in the city, and some writers say it is close to the dish's likely Burmese roots.
It is a plain, busy canteen that serves all day, which makes it useful when the lunch-only khao soi shops have shut.
What to order
- Khao soi neua: beef khao soi, the house signature
- Khao mok pae: goat biryani with yellow rice, often called the best thing on the menu
- Oxtail soup: a clear, spiced Thai-Muslim broth
- Satay with peanut sauce and cucumber relish
Good to know
- Useful in the afternoon, as it keeps serving well after the lunch-only khao soi shops close.
- It is a short walk from the Night Bazaar and Ban Haw Mosque; combine it with an evening at the market.
- Roti stalls nearby make an easy dessert stop.
