Chiang Mai (TH)
Kiat Ocha is a busy shophouse restaurant on Inthawarorot Road, just behind the Three Kings Monument in the centre of the old city. It specialises in khao man gai, Hainanese-style poached chicken with rice cooked in chicken stock.
It is one of the best-known chicken rice shops in Chiang Mai and is popular with locals and visitors from Bangkok alike. A second counter grills pork satay, which many regulars consider just as essential as the chicken.
It opens early for breakfast and closes mid-afternoon. Tables turn over quickly, though weekends and holidays can mean a short wait.
What to order
- Khao man gai: poached chicken over rice with ginger, chilli and fermented soybean sauce
- Ask for nuea luan if you want white meat only, without offal and blood jelly
- Moo satay: grilled pork skewers with peanut sauce and cucumber relish
- A second plate of satay to share, since the skewers are the other house speciality
Good to know
- Go early in the morning or before noon; it closes at 15:00.
- Check the address: other chicken rice stalls operate on the same stretch of road.
- Expect a brief wait at weekends and on public holidays.
