Prachak is a plain Cantonese roast shop on old Charoen Krung Road, with glazed ducks and slabs of red pork hanging in the front window. It is the best known of several roast duck specialists along this historic street in Bang Rak.
The shop dates from 1909 and is still run by the founding family, who say the roasting method has hardly changed. The duck is glossy and aromatic, served in a sweet, soy-based gravy rather than with shatteringly crisp skin. Tables turn over fast, and locals come in for a quick plate as much as visitors do.
What to order
- Roast duck on rice: sliced duck over rice with the house's sweet, soy-based sauce
- Roast duck with egg noodles: the same duck served over springy yellow noodles
- Barbecued red pork: sweet, lacquered pork that some regulars rate above the duck
- Mixed plate: duck with red pork, crispy pork belly and Chinese sausage on rice
Good to know
- Go before late afternoon, as duck can sell out towards the end of the day.
- It is a short walk from BTS Saphan Taksin and the Sathorn pier, and pairs well with Jok Prince a few doors away.
- Expect to share a table at lunchtime; service is quick.
