Chiang Mai (TH)
Huen Muan Jai is a northern Thai restaurant set in a wooden Lanna-style house with a garden, on Ratchaphruek Road north of the old city. Diners can sit indoors, outside or in small private pavilions.
Open for more than a decade, it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for good-value cooking. The menu is a wide survey of Lanna food, and Michelin inspectors highlight the galangal chilli dip with steamed mushrooms and a spicy vegetable soup with snakehead fish.
It is calmer and more comfortable than a street stall, but prices stay moderate. It suits a long lunch or relaxed dinner with several dishes to share.
What to order
- Nam prik kha: spicy galangal dip with steamed mushrooms, a Michelin pick
- Spicy vegetable soup with snakehead fish: fragrant and earthy, the other dish inspectors recommend
- A spread of northern chilli dips with fresh and steamed vegetables to share
- One of the herby northern soups or curries from the long Lanna menu
Good to know
- It is closed on Wednesdays, and Saturday has a break between 15:00 and 17:00.
- Cards are accepted, unlike most of the noodle shops nearby.
- It is close to Khao Soi Mae Sai, so plan one for breakfast and the other for dinner.
