Chiang Mai (TH)
Khao Soi Khun Yai is a small stall on Sri Poom Soi 8, just inside the northern moat of Chiang Mai's old city. Khun Yai means grandmother, and the set-up is as homely as the name suggests.
It has built a strong following among locals and travellers for a well-balanced coconut curry broth topped with a crisp nest of fried noodles. The menu is short: khao soi with chicken, beef or pork, plus a few extras.
Service runs only from late morning to early afternoon, six days a week, and the soup often runs out before closing time.
What to order
- Khao soi gai: chicken khao soi, the most popular bowl
- Khao soi neua: beef khao soi for a deeper, meatier broth
- Khao soi moo: the pork version
- Thai iced tea to cool the chilli
Good to know
- Arrive before 13:00; the soup often runs out before the 14:00 close.
- It is closed on Sundays.
- Walk in from Chang Phueak Gate; the stall is a few minutes east along Sri Poom Road, at Soi 8.
