Cherng Doi Roast Chicken

Cherng Doi Roast Chicken (Gai Yang Cherng Doi) is an open-air restaurant on Suk Kasame Road, a quiet street just off the Nimmanhaemin area. The name refers to the foothills of Doi Suthep, which rise behind this part of town.

It is popular for charcoal-grilled chicken with very crisp skin, served with dipping sauces and sticky rice. The fried papaya salad, a crunchy twist on som tam, is the other dish people come back for.

It is a casual, busy place where most meals come in at a few hundred baht or less, low prices for the Nimman area.

What to order

  • Gai yang: the signature roast chicken with crisp skin, by the half or whole bird
  • Som tam tod: deep-fried papaya salad with a spicy dressing on the side
  • Khao niao: sticky rice to eat with your hands
  • Moo yang: grilled pork as a second meat
  • Tam khao pod: spicy corn salad

Good to know

  • It is closed on Mondays.
  • Ask for mai pet (not spicy) or pet nit noi (a little spicy) if you are sensitive to chilli.
  • Reviewers mention free parking next door, handy if you are driving.
