Bangkok (TH)
Nai Mong is a small, easy-to-miss shophouse on Phlap Phla Chai Road, on the edge of Chinatown, that does one thing: hoi tod, the Teochew-style oyster or mussel omelette. You choose between a crispy version, fried until lacy and brittle, and a softer, gooier one.
The shop has been running for more than thirty years and held a Michelin Bib Gourmand in several Bangkok guides up to at least 2022. Mr Mong has passed the cooking to a trained successor who uses the same recipe and charcoal-fired pans. Service is brisk and seating is limited, so expect to wait at busy times.
What to order
- Crispy oyster omelette (or lua): a brittle, golden pancake studded with plump oysters
- Soft oyster omelette (or suan): a looser, silkier version for those who prefer texture over crunch
- Crispy mussel omelette: the same treatment with small mussels
- Crab fried rice: a simple, popular side if you want something more filling
Good to know
- Arrive near opening time to avoid the longest queue.
- It is a short walk from MRT Wat Mangkon on the Blue Line.
- Plates come in small, medium and large; a small one is enough to share as a snack.
