Bangkok (TH)
Or Tor Kor is the market of the Marketing Organization for Farmers, set up so growers could sell high-quality produce directly to the public. It sits on Kamphaeng Phet Road, directly across from Chatuchak Weekend Market, and has long been regarded as one of the country's best fresh markets.
The halls are bright, tidy and well organised, with sections for fruit, seafood, dried goods and curry pastes. A large cooked-food area sells curries, grilled meats, desserts and regional specialities to eat on the spot or take away. Prices are higher than at neighbourhood markets, and chefs shop here alongside home cooks.
What to order
- Seasonal fruit: mangoes, rose apples and durian, often with free tastings
- Nam prik: chilli relishes, including versions made with crab roe and salted egg
- Gai yang and som tam from the cooked-food stalls
- Thai desserts such as khanom and sticky rice with mango
Good to know
- Take the MRT to Kamphaeng Phet and use Exit 3, which comes out beside the market.
- Go in the morning for the best choice and cooler temperatures.
- Pair it with Chatuchak on a weekend; it is just across the road.
