Bangkok (TH)
Wattana Panich is an old shophouse on Ekkamai Road whose front is taken up by a huge pot of dark, herbal beef broth. The pot is never fully emptied: a portion of each day's stock is kept going overnight and built on the next morning, which gives the soup its deep, mellow flavour.
The recipe came from the current owner's father, and the family has been serving it for close to fifty years. Bowls of beef noodles come with tender slices, tendon and beef balls, and there is a goat stew for the adventurous. It is a no-frills room that feels a world away from the bars of nearby Thonglor.
What to order
- Beef noodle soup: sliced beef, tendon and beef balls in the long-simmered broth
- Goat stew: the shop's other speciality, rich and gamey
- Stewed beef without noodles: a bowl of the braise with rice, for the purest taste of the pot
Good to know
- Around 11:00 is a good time to get a seat before the lunch rush.
- It is roughly a 20-minute walk from BTS Ekkamai, so a short taxi or motorbike ride is easier.
- Bowls come in sizes; the standard bowl is around 100 baht.
