Bangkok (TH)
Nai Ek is a busy shophouse on Soi Yaowarat 9 specialising in guay jub, rolled rice noodles in a clear, peppery pork broth. Bowls come loaded with crispy pork, sliced pork, minced pork and offal, and the noodles here are thicker and chewier than at most stalls.
The founder started with a pushcart in Chinatown more than fifty years ago and moved into this permanent shop in 1989. It was included in the Michelin Guide's Bangkok selection for several years. Long opening hours make it a reliable stop at almost any time of day.
What to order
- Guay jub: rolled noodle soup with your choice of pork cuts and offal, in three sizes
- Crispy pork belly: crackling-topped pork served on the side
- Braised pork rump or stewed spare ribs: rich, soy-braised alternatives to the soup
- Pork blood soup: for those who want the broth without noodles
Good to know
- Morning and mid-afternoon are the quietest times; evenings fill up with Yaowarat food crawlers.
- MRT Wat Mangkon is the closest station, a short walk away.
- Ask for the crispy pork on the side so it stays crunchy.
